مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ قَالُوا ضَلُّوا عَنَّا بَل لَّمْ نَكُن نَّدْعُو مِن قَبْلُ شَيْئاً كَذَلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ الْكَافِرِينَ
Min dooni Allahi qaloo dalloo AAanna bal lam nakun nadAAoo min qablu shayan kathalika yudillu Allahu alkafireena

"In derogation of Allah?" They will reply: "They have left us in the lurch: Nay, we invoked not, of old, anything (that had real existence)." Thus does Allah leave the Unbelievers to stray.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
ثُمَّ قِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تُشْرِكُونَ ﴿٧٣﴾
مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ ...
Then it will be said to them: "Where are (all) those whom you considered partners -- besides Allah,''
means, it will be said to them, `where are the idols whom you used to worship instead of Allah. Can they help you today?'
... قَالُوا ضَلُّوا عَنَّا ....
They will say: "They have vanished from us...''
mean, they have gone away and they cannot do anything for us.'
.. بَل لَّمْ نَكُن نَّدْعُو مِن قَبْلُ شَيْئًا ...
Nay, we did not invoke (worship) anything before.
means, they will deny that they worshipped them.
This is like the Ayah:
ثُمَّ لَمْ تَكُنْ فِتْنَتُهُمْ إِلاَّ أَن قَالُواْ وَاللَّهِ رَبِّنَا مَا كُنَّا مُشْرِكِينَ
There will then be (left) no Fitnah (excuse) for them but to say: "By Allah, our Lord, we were not those who joined others in worship with Allah.'' (6:23)
Allah says:
... كَذَلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ الْكَافِرِينَ ﴿٧٤﴾
Thus Allah leads astray the disbelievers.
تفسير ابن كثير
" قالوا ضلوا عنا " أي ذهبوا فلم ينفعونا " بل لم نكن ندعو من قبل شيئا " أي جحدوا عبادتهم كقوله جلت عظمته " ثم لم تكن فتنتهم إلا أن قالوا والله ربنا ما كنا مشركين " ولهذا قال عز وجل " كذلك يضل الله الكافرين " .
تفسير الجلالين
"من دون الله" معه وهي الأصنام "قالوا ضلوا" غابوا "عنا" فلا نراهم "بل لم نكن ندعو من قبل شيئا" أنكروا عبادتهم إياها ثم أحضرت قال تعالى : "إنكم وما تعبدون من دون الله حصب جهنم" أي وقودها "كذلك" أي مثل إضلال هؤلاء المكذبين
