ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ يَتَمَطَّى
Thumma thahaba ila ahlihi yatamatta

Then did he stalk to his family in full conceit!

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Therefore, Allah says,
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّى
وَلَكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ يَتَمَطَّى ﴿٣٣﴾
So he neither believed nor prayed! But on the contrary, he denied and turned away!
Then he walked in conceit (full pride) to his family admiring himself!
meaning, stubborn, cruel, obstinate, wanton, lazy, having no concern and doing no deeds.
This is similar to Allah's statement,
وَإِذَا انقَلَبُواْ إِلَى أَهْلِهِمْ انقَلَبُواْ فَكِهِينَ
And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting. (83:31)
Allah also says,
إِنَّهُ كَانَ فِى أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُوراً
إِنَّهُ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ
Verily, he was among his people in joy! Verily, he thought that he would never come back (to Us)! (84:13,14)
meaning, return.
بَلَى إِنَّ رَبَّهُ كَانَ بِهِ بَصِيراً
Yes! Verily, his Lord has been ever beholding him! (84:15)
Ad-Dahhak reported from Ibn `Abbas that he said,ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ يَتَمَطَّى (Then he walked in conceit to his family admiring himself!)
"This means arrogantly,''
Qatadah and Zayd bin Aslam both said, "Strutting.''
تفسير ابن كثير
أي جذلانا أشرا بطرا كسلانا لا همة له ولا عمل كما قال تعالى " وإذا انقلبوا إلى أهلهم انقلبوا فكهين " وقال تعالى" إنه كان في أهله مسرورا إنه ظن أن لن يحور - أي يرجع - بلى إن ربه كان به بصيرا " قال الضحاك عن ابن عباس " ثم ذهب إلى أهله يتمطى " أي يختال وقال قتادة وزيد بن أسلم يتبختر .
تفسير الجلالين
"ثم ذهب إلى أهله يتمطى" يتبختر في مشيته إعجابا
تفسير القرطبي
أي يتبختر , افتخارا بذلك ; قاله مجاهد وغيره . مجاهد : المراد به أبو جهل . وقيل : " يتمطى " من المطا وهو الظهر , والمعنى يلوي مطاه . وقيل : أصله يتمطط , وهو التمدد من التكسل والتثاقل , فهو يتثاقل عن الداعي إلى الحق ; فأبدل من الطاء ياء كراهة التضعيف , والتمطي يدل على قلة الاكتراث , وهو التمدد , كأنه يمد ظهره ويلويه من التبختر . والمطيطة الماء الخاثر في أسفل الحوض ; لأنه يتمطى أي يتمدد ; وفي الخبر : ( إذا مشت أمتي المطيطاء وخدمتهم فارس والروم كان بأسهم بينهم " . والمطيطاء : التبختر ومد اليدين في المشي .
