فَعَتَوْا عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّاعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ
FaAAataw AAan amri rabbihim faakhathathumu alssaAAiqatu wahum yanthuroona

But they insolently defied the Command of their Lord: So the stunning noise (of an earthquake) seized them, even while they were looking on.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Allah said here,
وَفِي ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا حَتَّى حِينٍ
فَعَتَوْا عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّاعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ ﴿٤٤﴾
And in Thamud, when they were told: "Enjoy yourselves for a while!'' But they insolently defied the command of their Lord, so the Sa`iqah overtook them while they were looking.
Thamud were given a respite for three days, during which they await the torment. In the early morning of the fourth day, the torment overtook them,
تفسير ابن كثير
" وفي ثمود إذ قيل لهم تمتعوا حتى حين " قال ابن جرير يعني إلى وقت فناء آجالكم والظاهر أن هذه كقوله تعالى " وأما ثمود فهديناهم فاستحبوا العمى على الهدى فأخذتهم صاعقة العذاب الهون" وهكذا قال ههنا " وفي ثمود إذ قيل لهم تمتعوا حتى حين فعتوا عن أمر ربهم فأخذتهم الصاعقة وهم ينظرون " وذلك أنهم انتظروا العذاب ثلاثة أيام فجاءهم في صبيحة اليوم الرابع بكرة النهار.
تفسير الجلالين
"فعتوا" تكبروا "عن أمر ربهم" أي عن امتثاله "فأخذتهم الصاعقة" بعد مضي الثلاثة أيام أي الصيحة المهلكة "وهم ينظرون" أي بالنهار

أي خالفوا أمر الله فعقروا الناقة
إعراب — grammatical analysis
«وَفِي ثَمُودَ» الواو حرف عطف والجار والمجرور معطوفان على فيها.
«فَعَتَوْا» حرف عطف وماض وفاعله والجملة معطوفة على قيل.
«فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّاعِقَةُ» ماض ومفعوله والصاعقة فاعله والجملة معطوفة على عتوا.
«وَهُمْ» الواو حالية وهم مبتدأ.
