إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
Innahum kanoo qabla thalika mutrafeena

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Then, Allah the Exalted stated that they deserve this end,
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ﴿٤٥﴾
Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury,
meaning, in the life of the world, they were enjoying life's pleasures and satisfying their lusts, all the while ignoring what the Messengers brought to them,
تفسير ابن كثير
فقال تعالى " إنهم كانوا قبل ذلك مترفين " أي كانوا في الدار الدنيا منعمين مقبلين على لذات أنفسهم لا يلوون على ما جاءتهم به الرسل .
تفسير الجلالين
"إنهم كانوا قبل ذلك" في الدنيا "مترفين" منعمين لا يتعبون في الطاعة
تفسير القرطبي
أي إنما استحقوا هذه العقوبة لأنهم كانوا في الدنيا متنعمين بالحرام . والمترف المنعم , عن ابن عباس وغيره . وقال السدي : " مترفين " أي مشركين .

«إِنَّهُمْ» إن واسمها «كانُوا» كان واسمها «قَبْلَ» ظرف زمان «ذلِكَ» مضاف إليه «مُتْرَفِينَ» خبر كانوا وجملة كانوا .. خبر إنهم والجملة الاسمية تعليل.
