وَدَّت طَّآئِفَةٌ مِّنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ لَوْ يُضِلُّونَكُمْ وَمَا يُضِلُّونَ إِلاَّ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ

It is the wish of a section of the People of the Book to lead you astray. But they shall lead astray (Not you), but themselves, and they do not perceive!

Occasion of revelation
(A party of the People of the Scripture long to make you go astrayﾅ) [3:69]. This was revealed about Muadh ibn Jabal and Hudhayfah [ibn al-Yaman] and Ammar ibn Yasir when the Jews called them to embrace their religion. This story has already been mentioned in Surah the Cow.

The Envy the Jews Feel Towards Muslims; Their Wicked Plots Against Muslims
Allah says;
وَدَّت طَّآئِفَةٌ مِّنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ لَوْ يُضِلُّونَكُمْ وَمَا يُضِلُّونَ إِلاَّ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴿٦٩﴾
A party of the People of the Scripture wish to lead you astray. But they shall not lead astray anyone except themselves, and they perceive not.
Allah states that the Jews envy the faithful and wish they could misguide them.
Allah states that the punishment of this behavior will fall back upon them, while they are unaware.
تفسير ابن كثير
يخبر تعالى عن حسد اليهود للمؤمنين وبغيهم إياهم بالإضلال وأخبر أن وبال ذلك إنما يعود على أنفسهم وهم لا يشعرون أنهم ممكور بهم .
تفسير الجلالين
ونزل لما دعا اليهود معاذا وحذيفة وعمارا إلى دينهم : "ودت طائفة من أهل الكتاب لو يضلونكم وما يضلون إلا أنفسهم" لأن إثم إضلالهم عليهم والمؤمنون لا يطيعونهم فيه "وما يشعرون" بذلك
تفسير القرطبي
نزلت في معاذ بن جبل وحذيفة بن اليمن وعمار بن ياسر حين دعاهم اليهود من بني النضير وقريظة وبني قينقاع إلى دينهم . وهذه الآية نظير قوله تعالى : " ود كثير من أهل الكتاب لو يردونكم من بعد إيمانكم كفارا حسدا " [ البقرة : 109 ] . و " من " على هذا القول للتبعيض . وقيل : جميع أهل الكتاب , فتكون " من " لبيان الجنس .
إعراب — grammatical analysis
«وَدَّتْ طائِفَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتابِ» ودت فعل ماض والتاء للتأنيث طائفة فاعل من أهل متعلقان بصفة لطائفة الكتاب مضاف إليه.
«لَوْ يُضِلُّونَكُمْ» لو مصدرية يضلونكم فعل مضارع الواو فاعل والكاف مفعول به والمصدر المؤول في محل نصب مفعول به : ودت إضلالكم.
«وَما يُضِلُّونَ» الواو حالية ما نافية يضلون فعل مضارع وفاعل والجملة في محل نصبحال.
«إِلَّا أَنْفُسَهُمْ» إلا أداة حصر أنفسهم مفعول به.
«وَما يَشْعُرُونَ» الواو استئنافية ما نافية يشعرون فعل مضارع وفاعل والجملة مستأنفة.
