وَلاَ تَهِنُوا وَلاَ تَحْزَنُوا وَأَنتُمُ الأَعْلَوْنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

So lose not heart, nor fall into despair: For ye must gain mastery if ye are true in Faith.

Occasion of revelation
(Faint not nor grieveﾅ) [3:139]. Said Ibn Abbas: ﾓThe Companions of the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless
him and give him peace, were defeated at the Battle of Uhud. As they were in this situation, Khalid ibn al-Walid came forward leading a group of horsemen from the idolaters intending to climb over the hill to gain position of height over the Muslims. When he saw what was happening, the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless
him and give him peace, said: O Allah! Make that they are not above us. O Allah! We have no strength or might except through You. O Allah! No one worships You in this land except this group. Allah then revealed these verses. A group of Muslim marksmen took the initiative, climbed the hill and targeted the horses of the idolaters until they defeated them, hence His saying (for ye will overcome themﾅ)ﾔ.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Allah comforts the believers by saying,
وَلاَ تَهِنُوا ...
So do not become weak,
because of what you suffered.
... وَلاَ تَحْزَنُوا وَأَنتُمُ الأَعْلَوْنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ ﴿١٣٩﴾
nor be sad, and you will be triumphant if you are indeed believers.
for surely, the ultimate victory and triumph will be yours, O believers.
تفسير ابن كثير
قال تعالى مسليا للمؤمنين " ولا تهنوا " أي لا تضعفوا بسبب ما جرى " ولا تحزنوا وأنتم الأعلون إن كنتم مؤمنين " أي العاقبة والنصرة لكم أيها المؤمنون .
تفسير الجلالين
"ولا تهنوا" تضعفوا عن قتال الكفار "ولا تحزنوا" على ما أصابكم بأحد "وأنتم الأعلون" بالغلبة عليهم "إن كنتم مؤمنين" حقا وجوابه دل عليه مجموع ما قبله
تفسير القرطبي
عزاهم وسلاهم بما نالهم يوم أحد من القتل والجراح , وحثهم على قتال عدوهم ونهاهم عن العجز والفشل فقال " ولا تهنوا " أي لا تضعفوا ولا تجبنوا يا أصحاب محمد عن جهاد أعدائكم لما أصابكم .
إعراب — grammatical analysis
«وَلا تَهِنُوا» الواو عاطفة تهنوا مضارع مجزوم بلا وعلامة جزمه حذف النون والواو فاعل والجملة معطوفة ومثلها «وَلا تَحْزَنُوا».
«وَأَنْتُمُ الْأَعْلَوْنَ» أنتم مبتدأ الأعلون خبره مرفوع بالواو والجملة في محل نصب حال.
«إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ» إن الشرطية وكان واسمها وخبرها وفعل كان في محل جزم فعل الشرط وجواب الشرط محذوف دل عليه ما قبله.
