Tafsir Ibn Kathir
And Allah says:
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ ﴿٢٠٤﴾
Would they then wish for Our torment to be hastened on!
This is a denunciation and a threat, because they used to say to the Messenger, by way of denial, thinking it unlikely ever to happen:
ائْتِنَا بِعَذَابِ اللَّهِ
Bring Allah's torment upon us. (29:29)
This is as Allah said:
وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِالْعَذَابِ ...
And they ask you to hasten on the torment... (29:53-55)
تفسير ابن كثير
وقوله تعالى " أفبعذابنا يستعجلون " إنكار عليهم وتهديد لهم فإنهم كانوا يقولون للرسول تكذيبا واستبعادا : ائتنا بعذاب الله ; كما قال تعالى " ويستعجلونك بالعذاب" الآية .
تفسير القرطبي
قال مقاتل : قال المشركون للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يا محمد إلى متى تعدنا بالعذاب ولا تأتي به ! فنزلت : " أفبعذابنا يستعجلون " .
