وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُمْ بِالأُنثَى ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَدّاً وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ

When news is brought to one of them, of (the birth of) a female (child), his face darkens, and he is filled with inward grief!

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Idolators' Abhorrence for Daughters
Allah tells:
وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُمْ بِالأُنثَى ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَدًّا ...
And when the news of (the birth of) a female (child) is brought to any of them, his face becomes dark,
meaning with distress and grief.
... وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ ﴿٥٨﴾
and he is filled with inner grief!
meaning he is silent because of the intensity of the grief he feels.
تفسير ابن كثير
فإنه " إذا بشر أحدهم بالأنثى ظل وجهه مسودا " أي كئيبا من الهم " وهو كظيم " ساكت من شدة ما هو فيه من الحزن .
تفسير الجلالين
"وإذا بشر أحدهم بالأنثى" تولد له "ظل" صار "وجهه مسودا" متغيرا تغير مغتم "وهو كظيم" ممتلئ غما فكيف تنسب البنات إليه تعالى

أي أخبر أحدهم بولادة بنت .
إعراب — grammatical analysis
«وَإِذا» الواو حالية وإذا ظرف يتضمن معنى الشرط.
«بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُمْ» ماض مبني للمجهول ونائب فاعله والهاء مضاف إليه.
«بِالْأُنْثى » متعلقان ببشر.
«ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَدًّا» ظل واسمها وخبرها والجملة لا محل لها لأنها جواب شرط غير جازم.
«وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ» الواو حالية ومبتدأ وخبر والجملة حالية.
