ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّن بَعْدِ ذَلِكَ فَلَوْلاَ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَكُنتُم مِّنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
Thumma tawallaytum min baAAdi thalika falawla fadlu Allahi AAalaykum warahmatuhu lakuntum mina alkhasireena

But ye turned back thereafter: Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allah to you, ye had surely been among the lost.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Allah's statement,
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّن بَعْدِ ذَلِكَ فَلَوْلاَ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ ...
Then after that you turned away. Had it not been for the grace of Allah,
means, "Yet, after the firm pledge that you gave, you still deviated and broke your pledge'';
... فَلَوْلاَ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ ...
Had it not been for the grace and mercy of Allah upon you,
meaning, by forgiving you and by sending the Prophets and Messengers to you.
... لَكُنتُم مِّنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ ﴿٦٤﴾
Indeed you would have been among the losers.
meaning, in this life and the Hereafter due to their breach of the covenant.
تفسير ابن كثير
قوله تعالى" ثم توليتم من بعد ذلك فلولا فضل الله عليكم" يقول تعالى ثم بعد هذا الميثاق المؤكد العظيم توليتم عنه وانثنيتم ونقضتموه " فلولا فضل الله عليكم ورحمته " أي بتوبته عليكم وإرساله النبيين والمرسلين إليكم " لكنتم من الخاسرين" بنقضكم ذلك الميثاق في الدنيا والآخرة .
تفسير الجلالين
"ثم توليتم" أعرضتم "من بعد ذلك" الميثاق عن الطاعة "فلولا فضل الله عليكم ورحمته" لكم بالتوبة أو تأخير العذاب "لكنتم من الخاسرين" الهالكين
تفسير القرطبي
تولى تفعل , وأصله الإعراض والإدبار عن الشيء بالجسم , ثم استعمل في الإعراض عن الأوامر والأديان والمعتقدات اتساعا ومجازا .
إعراب — grammatical analysis
«ثُمَّ» عاطفة.
«تَوَلَّيْتُمْ» الجملة معطوفة على جملة أخذنا.
«مِنْ بَعْدِ» متعلقان بتوليتم.
«ذلِكَ» اسم إشارة في محل جر بالإضافة.
«فَلَوْ لا» الفاء استئنافية. لولا حرف امتناع لوجود.
«فَضْلُ» مبتدأ.
«اللَّهِ» لفظ الجلالة مضاف إليه.
«عَلَيْكُمْ» متعلقان بالمصدر فضل ، وخبره محذوف تقديره موجود.
«وَرَحْمَتُهُ» معطوف على فضل.
«لَكُنْتُمْ» اللام واقعة في جواب شرط لولا. كنتم فعل ماض ناقص والتاء اسمها.
«مِنَ الْخاسِرِينَ» متعلقان بالخبر المحذوف. وجملة لكنتم لا محل لها جواب شرط غير جازم.
