وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هَلْ تُحِسُّ مِنْهُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ رِكْزاً
Wakam ahlakna qablahum min qarnin hal tuhissu minhum min ahadin aw tasmaAAu lahum rikzan
Yusuf Ali
But how many (countless) generations before them have We destroyed? Canst thou find a single one of them (now) or hear (so much as) a whisper of them?

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
His saying,
وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ ...
And how many a generation before them have We destroyed!
means from the nations that disbelieved in the signs of Allah and rejected His Messengers.
... هَلْ تُحِسُّ مِنْهُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ رِكْزًا ﴿٩٨﴾
Can you find a single one of them or hear even a whisper of them!
Meaning, `have you seen any of them or even heard a whisper from them.'
Ibn Abbas, Abu Al-Aliyah, Ikrimah, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Sa`id bin Jubayr, Ad-Dahhak and Ibn Zayd all said,
"This means any sound.''
Al-Hasan and Qatadah both said that this means,
"Do you see with your eye, or hear any sound!''

تفسير ابن كثير
وقوله " وكم أهلكنا قبلهم من قرن " أي من أمة كفروا بآيات الله وكذبوا رسله " هل تحس منهم من أحد أو تسمع لهم ركزا " أي هل ترى منهم أحدا أو تسمع لهم ركزا قال ابن عباس وأبو العالية وعكرمة والحسن البصري وسعيد بن جبير والضحاك وابن زيد يعني صوتا وقال الحسن وقتادة هل ترى عينا أو تسمع صوتا والركز في أصل اللغة هو الصوت الخفي قال الشاعر : فتوحشت ركز الأنيس فراعها عن ظهر غيب والأنيس سقامها آخر تفسير سورة مريم ولله الحمد والمنة ويتلوه إن شاء الله تفسير سورة طه ولله الحمد .
تفسير الجلالين
"وكم" أي كثيرا "أهلكنا قبلهم من قرن" أي أمة من الأمم الماضية بتكذيبهم الرسل "هل تحس" تجد "منهم من أحد أو تسمع لهم ركزا" صوتا خفيا ؟ لا فكما أهلكنا أولئك نهلك هؤلاء

أي من أمة وجماعة من الناس يخوف أهل مكة
