وَمَا يَتَّبِعُ أَكْثَرُهُمْ إِلاَّ ظَنّاً إَنَّ الظَّنَّ لاَ يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئاً إِنَّ اللّهَ عَلَيمٌ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ
Wama yattabiAAu aktharuhum illa thannan inna alththanna la yughnee mina alhaqqi shayan inna Allaha AAaleemun bima yafAAaloona

But most of them follow nothing but fancy: truly fancy can be of no avail against truth. Verily Allah is well aware of all that they do.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Allah says;
وَمَا يَتَّبِعُ أَكْثَرُهُمْ إِلاَّ ظَنًّا إَنَّ الظَّنَّ لاَ يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا ...
And most of them follow nothing but conjecture. Certainly, conjecture can be of no avail against the truth.
Allah explained that they did not follow their own religion out of evidence and proof. The fact is that they were following mere conjecture and imagination. But conjecture is in no way a substitute for the truth.
He said,
... إِنَّ اللّهَ عَلَيمٌ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ ﴿٣٦﴾
Allah is All-Aware of what they do.
This is both a threat and a promise of severe punishment.
Allah said that He would reward them for their actions with a complete reward.
تفسير ابن كثير
ثم بين تعالى أنهم لا يتبعون في دينهم هذا دليلا ولا برهانا وإنما هو ظن منهم أي توهم وتخيل وذلك لا يغني عنهم شيئا " إن الله عليم بما يفعلون " تهديد لهم ووعيد شديد لأنه تعالى أخبر أنه سيجازيهم على ذلك أتم الجزاء .
تفسير الجلالين
"وما يتبع أكثرهم" في عبادة الأصنام "إلا ظنا" حيث قلدوا فيه آباءهم "إن الظن لا يغني من الحق شيئا" فيما المطلوب منه العلم "إن الله عليم بما يفعلون" فيجازيهم عليه
تفسير القرطبي
يريد الرؤساء منهم ; أي ما يتبعون إلا حدسا وتخريصا في أنها آلهة تشفع , ولا حجة معهم . وأما أتباعهم فيتبعونهم تقليدا .
إعراب — grammatical analysis
«وَما» الواو استئنافية وما نافية.
«يَتَّبِعُ أَكْثَرُهُمْ» مضارع وفاعله والهاء مضاف إليه والجملة مستأنفة.

«بِما» اسم الموصول في محل جر بالباء ومتعلقان بعليم.
«يَفْعَلُونَ» مضارع مرفوع بثبوت النون والواو فاعل والجملة صلة.
